Background
Lifetime athlete playing football at the United States Air Force Academy. Later transferred to the University of California San Diego to play basketball. Was a 4-year starter and Team Captain for Sophomore, Junior and Senior seasons. At time of graduation was the all time leader 3-point shooter and led team to first Sweet-16 appearance, finishing as first team all conference, first team all California and an honorable mention All-American selection. While at UCSD I was the Triton Athletic Council Student Athlete President. Acting as the primary point of contact for UCSD athletes, University administrators, and the UCSD Athletic Department. Following graduation in 2016 I joined the UCSD basketball coaching staff where I remained an assistant for two year. 2016 is also when I discovered Jiu-Jitsu and my passion for Martial Arts. Training under Baret Yoshida at the Arena MMA, I earned my blue belt in 6-months after winning several of local tournaments and concluding my time as a white belt winning the IBJJF World Championship. After winning worlds I shifted my focus to MMA, training under Vince Salvador and Chuck Martinez. I competed in one Muay-Thai fight, winning by decision. From there I recognized the time required to become a professional MMA fighter and let that dream go. With other goals and pursuits I understood I would not be able to devote the time and energy. As a blue belt I have continued to compete, winning numerous local tournaments, winning gold at the 2019 No Gi American Nationals, and Bronze in the Gi. I now train at Surfight under Joel Tudor and Magid Hage. I spoke with Herb Dean today about taking his course to earn my MMA Referee certifications (to be clear, I'm not a certified Referee at this time). I plan on taking Herb's course at the earliest next availability - August of 2021. Herd identified that after earning my certification, volunteering time with Camo are the best next steps towards being appointed as a referee for upcoming bouts. I wanted to reach out now just in case there are things I can do in the near term to help the promotion and make myself an asset prior to earning my certification. My reason for taking this path is my passion for the sport has only grown despite ending my pursuit to be a fighter myself. I see becoming the best referee I can be as the perfect way to contribute to a sport and athletes that I have the upmost respect for. Please let me know if there's any additional information I can provide or if there is anything I can do to support in the near term. All the best, Drew Dyer Update of October 11, 2021 I have completed my certification course from Herd Dean. I am now certified as a MMA Referee and Judge
